Microsoft is ending support for Windows 7, Server 2008 and SBS2011 (Small Business Server 2011) – Why you need to upgrade NOW
We’ve answered the 7 key questions every business owner needs to know to determine when you need to upgrade.
So, what’s changing?
As of 14th January 2020, Microsoft are discontinuing support of the following operating systems.
- Windows 7
- Server 2008
- SBS2011 (Small Business Server 2011)
What does that mean?
If you are operating your business using Windows 7, Server 2008 or SBS2011, you will need to have upgraded before 14 January 2020 as Microsoft will no longer be issuing critical security updates.
Some of your workstations or servers can do this – others may be too old to be able to be upgraded, or simply too expensive to be worth upgrading.
Q1: How do I know if I have one of these versions of Windows on my devices?
If you are unsure what versions you are running, you can Contact Us for a complimentary site assessment to confirm what you require CLICK HERE to book our complimentary review.
Q2: Does this mean I need to buy new computers?
Not necessarily – we’ve tested the current upgrades on lots of different types of existing equipment and found that the migration works well in most situations.
Obviously if you have a Commodore 64 we’ll need to have a little chat! 😉
Q3: Why choose to upgrade hardware as part of this process?
The top reason for updating equipment should always be that it increases your staff productivity – which increases profitability.
In some cases, your hardware may be too old to be worth updating. It may be more cost effective to update devices, rather than spending lots of man hours updating old machines. Common sense?
Q4: What’s it going to cost?
You should allow between 2 – 3 hours of labour time per computer.
Plus, a Microsoft Windows 10 Upgrade License @ $300 +GST – (However, your business may be eligible for a free upgrade depending on your current system).
If you need to update your hardware, we’re happy to do a quote. We’re always here to discuss your unique requirements.
Q5: Why do I need to do it?
As of 14th January 2020, Microsoft are discontinuing support of Windows 7, Server 2008 and SBS2011. As of this date, Microsoft will no longer be issuing critical security updates making your computers more vulnerable to future security risks and cyber-attacks.
Q6: What happens if I don’t do the update by the Deadline?
If you don’t complete your updates by the deadline important system patches will not occur (as they do now). These patches protect your business. Therefore, after that date your system becomes vulnerable to hackers.
Q7: Can we get it done out of business hours to reduce staff downtime?
Yes you can. We have already commenced updating customers systems with great success. All outside business hours.
